About Island Nectar Honey

Island Nectar is a small family run bee business operating in the Bay of Islands, Northland, New Zealand

Our Story

Since 2007 we have been caring for our honey bee colonies and harvesting the honey they produce. Over recent years we have extended our bee business to include our own certified honey facility where we can exclusively extract and pack the honey from our own hives into pots.

Our honey is unique in that our hives are situated in and around the beautiful Bay of Islands, on both Islands in the Bay and the main land, with several of our apiary sites being accessible only by boat.

Our bees forage the nectar and pollen from the flowers of the Mānuka, Kānuka, Pohutukawa and other trees native to Northland’s coastal and inland bush, to produce delicious “raw and natural, pure honey.”

Honey Facts

Pure raw honey is not heat-treated or pasteurised and has no additives or extra ingredients added. It is filtered to remove any traces of wax.

Crystallisation patterns in the honey mean it has not been heat-treated and is a feature of raw and non-creamed honey. Inside the beehive the temperature is approximately 31 to 32°C, because of this, the honey inside the hive is usually quite liquid in texture. However when the storage temperature of honey cools down, most honey will eventually crystallise and turn hard.

If you prefer a more smooth texture and your honey has crystallised, you can stand it in a bowl of hot water (not boiling) to gently warm it.
